Subject: 2017 Provincial Scale Mock Search, EMX, SAR Alberta AGM - Save the date
  • 2017 EMX/ Provincial Mock Search/ SAR Alberta AGM*
  • Save these dates and mark your calendars for a weekend of fun and learning*
  • April 28 - 30, 2017 - Slave Lake, Alberta*

Lesser Slave Lake SAR will be hosting the 2017 SAR Alberta AGM, SAR workshops, provincial scale mock search and Emergency Exercise. For a special treat, a TV film crew may be filming participants to be in the reality TV show Hellfire Heroes with the potential of airing on the Discovery Network.

Friday will be the Emergency Exercise put on by our 27 protective services agencies which will morph into a provincial scale mock search - completing just before supper time on Saturday. Friday you will have the opportunity to take part in various training activities while the Emergency Exercise is going on, Saturday will be the Provincial Mock Search and Sunday will be the Annual General meeting of the Alberta Search and Rescue Association.

We are working on a great line up of valuable workshops for Friday. If you have any specific requests, you can send them to Michael Kary at training@saralberta.ca and we will see if we can accommodate.

As part of the Friday evening / Saturday morning training, there is the opportunity for a unique live outdoor overnight workshop. Put your 24 or 72 hour pack to the test by using it to spend Friday night outdoors in the wilderness. If we have interest, we would like to send a couple of teams in by foot to a remote location to overnight and stage some searching/rescue for Saturday morning. Please let us know if you would be interested in participating in this unique opportunity.

Saturday's mock search will be a large scale mock with support from Multi Protective Agencies such as Agriculture and Forestry (formerly ESRD), RCMP, fire, ambulance, municipalities, Alberta Health, bylaw enforcement, Highway Patrol, and several more! Slave Lake has the ability to set up almost any type of scenario to test your team's special training. We will have opportunities for ground searching, ATV/UTV, Dog rescue, ice / swift water rescue, technical rescue, etc. If you are part of a special team, including the ones just listed and any others, and you would like to see some part of the mock designed around using your special team's tal=ents, please let us know so that we can incorporate it into part of the mock search. Some examples of additional interest we are thinking of is equestrian search teams, mountain bike search teams, tracking teams, drone search teams, CASARA, etc. If we know you are interested in attending and bringing your animals or special equipment, then we will do our best to set something up for you. If there are any others that we have missed and you are part of and you would like to see an activity based around it, please let us know. If you are interested in any of the special team's opportunities, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can build it in. As we all know, the end of April will be here before we know it.

Slave Lake is a town of 6500 with full amenities 250 km northwest of Edmonton on Highway 2 / Highway 44. We are uniquely located beside the largest road accessible lake wholly within Alberta, with some of the finest beaches in the province. We are in boreal forest on the edge of the foothills. We have the largest active sand dune accessible by road in Alberta. We are blessed with a bounty of nature with a touch of urban amenities including the big box stores of Walmart, Canadian Tire and our beloved Tim Hortons, and of course all of our smaller local stores and shops.

We recognize Slave Lake is a long way to travel from the bigger population centers and SAR events and commitments often take us away from family. There is potential for family activities and things to do and see in our area. Please let us know if blending some family experiences in would help your attendance.

More information will be released as it is available.

  • Make sure you mark your calendars and plan to attend this first ever

combination of events in Slave Lake April 28 - 30, 2017! Hope to see you all there!*

Please send all enquiries, interest and suggestions etc via email to sar@slavelake.ca.

Thanks,

Jim Meldrum
