[edit] Requirements

  • standardize and simplify our range of carabiners
  • Technical Rescue Riggers Guide, 2nd edition by Rick Lipke pg 183: 24-36 locking aluminum carabiners (steel if have to meet NFPA requirements)
  • NFPA requires MBS 27 kN for "T" Technical Use, 40 kN for "G" General Use
  • PEP RRTM manual requires strength matching use, which in 20 kN for most purposes, could be 30 kN for 3 person load on 12.5mm rope, 40 kN (use trilink) for 2 person load on counter balance.
  • "D" shape generally, though can use some pear shaped for radium load releasing hitch and italian hitch
  • prefer aluminum for light weight
  • gate opening minimum 1.8cm -- chosen as median of quality biners, sort of a proxy for working size
  • 24 carabiners at CAD$23.00 = ~CAD$560
