[edit] Announcement

Course Name: Search and Rescue Fundamentals

Description:

Also known as ERI SAR Basics, SAR Fundamentals is the introductory course that covers all the basic material that a SAR worker needs to know. It includes both classroom and outdoor exercises. A provincially recognized, SAR Alberta certificate is issued for satisfactory completion of the course.

Offered To:

All interested persons - search and rescue workers, government workers, and members of the public.

Instructor:

Brett Wuth and guest instructors

Place: Pincher Creek.

Date:

The course is 40 hours spread over 6 days. February 8-10 and 22-24, 2013. See detail of times and places on the web page http://pcsar.webhop.org/mediawiki/index.php/2013-02_SAR_Fundamentals

Prerequisites:

By the 2nd weekend of the SAR Fundamentals course, the student must have completed separately and show an ICS 100 certificate. This approximately 3 hour course is available from multiple sources, including for free on-line from the Alberta government. It takes approximately 3 weeks to issue certificates, so students are encouraged to start on this prior to the first weekend. See http://pcsar.webhop.org/mediawiki/index.php/Training/ICS_100

For SAR Alberta certification, the student must also attain separately (before or after) and show a valid Standard First Aid certification.

Although there are roles in SAR for people of all physical abilities, this course requires the students to perform some vigourous outdoor activities. Students should be able to walk 3 km in one hour through lightly wooded mostly level terrain in cold weather while wearing a 10 kg pack and avoiding terrain hazards.

Cost:

Pincher Creek Search and Rescue is not receiving outside funding for this course. If a registered student does not attend, PC SAR will still have to pay fixed costs.

For non-PC SAR members, PC SAR hosts the course on a cost recovery basis. A deposited fee of $65 is required to hold a seat.

For PC SAR members, PC SAR will use internal funding to cover the cost of the course. A $50 deposit is still required which will be refunded if the student completes the course.
