January 3, 2012 19:00 to 20:30 Fire hall Pincher Creek Search and Rescue had a training on UTMs (Universal Transverse Mercator), maps and GPS’s. It was an interesting experience Brett taught us how to find out where we are and how to find another place. Brett also showed us what the different types of maps and how to use them.

February 7, 2012 19:00 to 21:00 Fire hall Pincher Creek Search and Rescue had training on avalanches and the equipment that is needed to find people that have been buried in the snow. Eric talked about the importance to search right away as the sooner found the greater chance for survival. Russ showed us that if we go to Avalanche.ca we could find out the conditions in the backcountry. Russ also showed us what happens when people are caught in avalanches and how serious the outcome can be. Eric and Russ then showed us how to use the search beacons and we went outside to try out the equipment. We learned that the most important thing is to know what our equipment does and how to use it.
