[edit] Announcement

Course Name: Search and Rescue Basics

Description:

Also known as SAR Fundamentals, SAR Basics is the introductory course that covers all the basic material that a SAR worker needs to know. It includes both classroom and outdoor exercises. A provincially recognized certificate is issued for satisfactory completion of the course.

Offered To:

All interested persons - search and rescue workers, government workers, and members of the public.

Instructor:

Brett Wuth and guest instructors

Place: Provincial Building, Pincher Creek (and various outdoor venues).

Date:

The course is 40 hours spread over 6 days.

February 12-14 and 26-28, 2020. Note these dates are Wednesdays (evenings) to Fridays. They have been chosen to accommodate needs of students that normally work weekends.

See detail of times and places on the web page http://pcsar.dyndns.org:8080/mediawiki/index.php/2020_Spring_SAR_Basics

Prerequisites:

By the 2nd weekend of the SAR Fundamentals course, the student must have completed separately and show an ICS 100 certificate. This approximately 3 hour course is available from multiple sources, including for free on-line from the Alberta government. See http://pcsar.webhop.org/mediawiki/index.php/Training/ICS_100

For SAR Alberta certification, the student must also attain separately (before or after) and show a valid Standard First Aid certification.

Although there are roles in SAR for people of all physical abilities, this course requires the students to perform some vigourous outdoor activities. Students should be able to walk 3 km in one hour through lightly wooded mostly level terrain in cold weather while wearing a 10 kg pack and avoiding terrain hazards.

Cost:

This course is partially funded by an Alberta Government grant and the Shell Social Investment Fund, with additional costs being underwritten by PCSAR.

Seating is limited. Students who register but do not attend or do not complete the course restrict participation and funding for other students who would have completed the course. A $50 deposit is required to hold a seat. The deposit will be refunded if the student completes the course.
